Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Frederick Nelson, along with his sons, Andrew, Christopher and Nicholas, avid fisherman from Maryland, chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the north at 15 mph, seas running 3-5 ft. with the sun playing peek-a-boo.
As we were discussing what type of fishing the boys wanted to do, I advised them that we have been doing very well with Shark fishing. All of the young Nelsons decided to go for the Shark, so I made it a part of our fishing plan.
We started off trolling in 120 ft. of water located in Fort Lauderdale with one plainer down with a 3 ˝ blue reflector drone spoon and four Ballyhoos surface baits with a squid daisy chain teaser. I could see a color change off shore so I headed out towards it – sitting in 350 ft. of water, less than 2 miles from shore. I trolled the color change which had a few sargassum weeds, but the further I traveled on it, we saw more accumulation of weeds. I could see birds working in front of me, a good indication of fish. As we trolled passed the birds, the outrigger came down – Mahi Mahi – we wound up catching 7 Mahi Mahi’s.
It was now Shark time!!!! I headed towards an area where I have been catching Sharks this past week. We put out one Shark surface bait, one mi-range Shark bait and one Shark bottom bait. Forty-five minutes into it, lines screamed off of the Pen 80 International Reel – hooked up!!!! Andrew jumped into the fighting chair to do battle and then the rest of the boys took turns, including the father, Frederick. One hour and fifteen minutes later a Hammerhead Shark appeared behind the boat estimated in the 320 lb class. It has a pleasure to see the entire Nelson family work together to bring in the Shark. Mark, our mate, grabbed the leader, pictures were taken, and the Shark was released to do battle again.
All anglers retired into the a/c salon aboard the Happy Day Today for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
