Fun day on the water offshore fishing for Mahi, Shark, Wahoo and King Mackerel. The charter boat Happy Day Today went 4 to 5 miles offshore and targeted Mahi-Mahi, the bite was slow offshore so we headed back inshore and started to catch King Mackerel and the action was pretty steady. Typically when fishing inshore for the King Mackerel and Bonito, Barracuda, we are averaging 3 to 4 fish an hour.
The bait we use is a simple rig called a strip rig. We take two skirts colored pink and purple with a two hooks (6/0) then attach a strip of bait that is about 6" long. Using a planner drives the skirted bait down about 40 to 50 feet deep. This is where most of our deep sea action is, also we fish four Ballyhoos on the surface and another cedar plug long for the Black Fin Tuna bite.
