Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Bob Wither from Canada, with extra time on his hand waiting for his flight to return home, decided to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL aboard the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team. Winds were out of the east at 12 mph, 4-5 ft. seas with blue water pushed into the 2nd reef.
With a short distance to the fishing grounds, you are there in 15 minutes after the leaving the dock – the drop off in 120 ft. of water in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We put one plainer down with a black and blue sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip. For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and three Bonito strips, and a Ballyhoo dredge for a teaser. I could see a rip forming in 200 ft. of water, so I trolled the rip. As Bob was our only angler aboard the boat, I knew he would have his hands full.
Our first strike was a double header Mahi Mahi, as Bob reeled one in and immediately reeled in the other. I kept trolling the rip, and a black shadow appeared on the dredged teaser – Sailfish!!!! Mark, our mate, reeled in the Ballyhoo to entice the Sailfish, but to no avail, as the Sailfish was not interested. We continued trolling and Bob, our angler, wound up with six Mahi Mahi’s weighing from 5-13 lbs. and one Kingfish.
Bob retired to the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
