Fort Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
With our winds out of the east, southeast at 10 mph, 20% chance of rain which we desperately need, temperatures in the high 80’s, makes for a beautiful day for charter fishing on the Happy Day Today out of Fort Lauderdale FL with guest Mark Pinner from Tampa, Chairman of AAU Karate, and friends, one of whom was from as far away as Japan.
Today we decided to do some Shark fishing so I headed to the area where we do our Shark fishing that sits in 350 ft of water. We set up one kite with two live Blue Runners, one surface bait with a Tuna carcass, one mid range Bonito bait down 100 feet and one King fish bait on the bottom in 350 feet of water; with fish oil dripping out of our container hanging over the side producing a great chum slick. Sitting around talking about the changes taking place in Fort Lauderdale in my past 35 years, seeing hotels torn down and replaced with new high rise hotels all of a sudden the deep line bends over and the battle starts. Mitch our mate clears the rest of the surface baits and the live bait from the kites; our angler gets strapped into our fighting chair. Five minutes into the battle, the hook gets pulled from the fish.
We went back to our same spot and reset. Again we settled down, talking about the strength of the fish that pulled the hook. I looked towards the kite and saw a dorsal fin circling the Blue Runner bait. I could see that the fish was a Golden Hammerhead Shark. The Shark attacked the bait, causing our 60 lb. test line to scream off the reel. Mitch cleared the rest of our fishing tackle and Tom again settled into the fighting chair. An hour and 50 minutes later, Mitch grabbed the leader on the estimated 250 lb Golden Hammerhead Shark. Cameras snapped away as the fish was subdued to the side of the boat and then was freed to fight again another day. Our angler with a smile from ear to ear signaled thumbs up to me.
It was time to start heading back from our deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL to the dock at Bahia Mar. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing charter on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
