Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Gene Patton, a good client of mine, along with his son, Joey, and friend, Kevin Caylor, from the beautiful state of Tennessee combined a business trip with a fishing expedition by chartering the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL.
Winds were out of the south at 15 mph, seas running 4-5 ft. We stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait boat in the inlet. Fifteen minutes later we were off of the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL at 145 ft. of water. We put two kites out with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the rigger with a spin-on-lead. As we were discussing the previous fishing charters Gene had with us, the black shadow appeared on the left long kite – Sailfish!!!! – dorsal fin out of the water as the Sailfish devoured the live bait – hooked up!!! The Sailfish came out of the water showing his magnificent pure power as he tail-walked on the water shaking his head from side to side trying to dislodge the hook, and he was successful as the line went slack.
We reset up again and waited for another Sailfish. Dorsal fin on the right short kite bait!!!! But the dorsal fin belonged to a Hammerhead Shark. Joey hopped into the fighting chair to do battle. Forty minutes later the estimated 7 ½ ft. Hammerhead Shark was brought to the side of the boat for picture taking and release.
As we reset again another black shadow appeared – Sailfish. Immediately eating the bait and exiting the water, greyhounding away from the boat. Mark, our mate, cleared the rest of the lines so Kevin could jump into the fighting chair to do battle with the Sailfish. Twenty-five minutes later, Kevin brought the 87” Sailfish to the boat for picture taking and released to fight again.
The anglers retired into the a/c salon aboard the Happy Day Today for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
