Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
A group of employees for Seaworthy Insurance Company from all over the country, Doug Shambler, along with Matt, Mike, Ed, Bran and Jim, combined a business conference with a fishing trip by chartering the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sport sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL. Winds were out of the north, north east at 12 mph, seas running 4-6 ft pushed the blue water into the depth of 80 ft. of water.
On the way out, we stopped at Port Everglades to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from the bait boat T&T. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in the water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL located in 120 ft. of water. From there if you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water due to our extreme drop off. For deep lines, I put out two #8 plainers, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a double hook Bonito strip with a pink and blue sea witch. For surface baits we put out two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips. I trolled the reef, zigzagging from 80 ft. of water out to 200 ft. while all the anglers took turn catching Kingfish and Bonitos. Some of the Kingfish were undersized and so we released them.
From there I decided to do some kite fishing with live Goggle Eyes for bait. With two kites out and four Goggle Eyes splashing on the surface representing a wounded bait fish, we sat and waited for the predator’s arrival. While all the fellows were talking shop, I noticed this huge brown shadow approaching the boat. As the shadow came closer within 10 ft. of the boat, I could see that is was a Manta Ray with a huge 10’ wing span. Hoping there would be some Cobia or Mahi Mahi around the Manta Ray, we threw out a line with a live Goggle Eye, but nobody was home. It is a little early in the year for Cobias. The live kite baits produced a couple of nice Tunas and Kingfish.
On our ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316, the anglers retired to the a/c salon.
