Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Kevin and Beth Iliff were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale, FL, taking in the bright sun and warm temperature before the frigid winters in Thief River Falls, Minnesota starts. They chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL. Today, winds were out of the west at 7 mph and the seas were running 2-3 ft.
After leaving the dock at Bahia Mar, fifteen minutes later lines were in the water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL located in 120 ft. of water. Due to our extreme drop off, a quarter mile more off shore, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water. We put two plainers down, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a double hook Bonito strip with a blue and pink sea witch in front. For surface baits we had two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos.
We trolled crisscrossing the reefs from 80 ft of water out to 200 ft. and caught a total six Bonitos, one Tuna, eight Kingfish which we kept and released 12 of them.
After 35 years of fishing in Fort Lauderdale, I am now seeing more and more undersized Kingfish in this area, which we are releasing. This is due to the limit of netting Kingfish set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission a few years back. We are now seeing the positive affects of this law, enabling the Kingfish to grow to maturity.
After a successful fishing adventure, Kevin and Beth retired to the a/c salon for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
