Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak
Lisa O’Connell and Ken Malonson from Boston, enjoying the sunny skies here in Fort Lauderdale, decided to charter the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. As Lisa and Ken boarded the boat, they were welcomed by the Topshotfishing team. Lisa, an avid angler, told me about some of the Wahoos she has caught in the past and how amazingly fast they are, clocked at 64 mph. Today the goal was to put food on the dinner plate.
Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. If you venture out another ¼ of a mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water due to our extreme drop off located very close to Fort Lauderdale, FL in Broward County. We started off trolling with two #8 plainers down, both with sea witches and double hooked Bonito strips behind them. For surface baits we had three Ballyhoos and a Ballyhoo teaser.
As we trolled the reefs, I headed towards some of our 34 artificial wrecks located in Fort Lauderdale. The two anglers caught a total of five Kingfish, 2 Barracudas and 6 Bonitos. I headed off to a rip that was forming in 450 ft. of water searching for Green Hornets, but with no luck. With the fat lady ready to blow the whistle, I headed back towards the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale. With five minutes left in the charter, the center rigger came down and the line exited the reel at a fast pace – Sailfish!!!!! – he immediately came out of the water doing his 360° acrobats. Ken was our angler and hopped into the fighting chair as our mate, Dave, handed him the rod to do battle. After a 20 minute fight, Dave grabbed the bill of the Sailfish for picture taking and was released to fight again. This was Ken’s first Sailfish and gets a gold star for his angling abilities.
It was time to head back to the dock; the anglers popped open a cold one to celebrate in the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. At the dock, Dave filet out their catch for the night’s dinner.
