Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Brent Graig, a repeat customer, and his friend, Lane Wallace, from Tennessee chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the east at 5mph, blue skies, and temperatures in the high 80’s. This is Brent’s third charter with us this week on doctor’s orders to relief business stress.
After leaving the dock at Bahia Mar, fifteen minutes later we were at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale located in 120 ft. of water, 1.8 miles from shore. If you venture out another ¼ mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water. We started off trolling with two plainers down, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a pink and blue sea witch in front of a double hook Ballyhoo –both plainers were #8. For surface baits we went with 4 Ballyhoos.
As we trolled around catching Kingfish, Bonitos and Tunas, Lane requested to do some Shark fishing. With little or no current, it is a good practice to set up close to an artificial wreck which holds the bait fish and in return the predators are close by. The wreck we fished on was in 310 ft. of water. We put out three Shark baits, one on the surface, one midrange and one on the bottom. After a half hour into it, our bottom rod bent over and Lane jumped into the fighting chair to do battle. Fifteen minutes later, Lane was rewarded with a 55 lb. Amberjack, not a Shark but a good fighting fish. We repeated the set up and again the bottom rod bent over and Lane jumped into the fighting chair once again. Fifteen minutes later, to our surprise another twin Amberjack appeared.
With no Sharks today but a great deal of fishing and fun, it was time to head back. The anglers retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
